Throughout the weekend, there will be plenty of opportunities to shop French General, discover special vintage treasures, enjoy delicious food and tea, and spend time stitching with old friends and new ones.

Whether you join us for a single day or the entire weekend, Road to French General is a celebration of everything we love—beautiful fabrics, antique textiles, handwork, good food, a bit of Lillet Blanc, and the wonderful community that gathers around a shared love of making.

After our morning of digging, we’ll gather at French General for a delicious lunch and a chance to relax, share our discoveries, and enjoy a little time together. In the afternoon, we’ll settle in for a special hands-on workshop at the shop, spending the rest of the day stitching and creating.

The Second Life of Linen: From Chemise to Apron with Lorraine Lovell / Saturday and Sunday, January 23rd and 24th 10-4pm

Join renowned Australian textile artist and educator Lorraine Lovell for an inspiring two-day workshop during in Los Angeles. Combining history, handwork, and creative expression, this unique class transforms a reproduction 19th-century French chemise into a beautiful, wearable appliquéd apron inspired by French country textiles and antique needlework traditions.

Throughout the workshop, Lorraine will teach students the art of needle-turn appliqué, incorporating embroidery, cross stitching and decorative stitching to bring their apron to life. She will share her approach to appliqué placement and design, along with garment alteration, construction, and finishing techniques that transform a simple chemise into a beautifully crafted heirloom piece. Students will learn how to combine fabrics and motifs inspired by French General, creating layers of pattern, texture, and handwork that make each apron uniquely their own.

Expect two days filled with beautiful fabrics, fascinating stories, thoughtful instruction, and plenty of time to stitch and create. By the end of the workshop, you’ll have a beautiful finished or nearly finished apron, new appliqué and embroidery techniques to carry into future projects, and a deeper appreciation for the rich history of French textile arts. If you have ever taken a class with Lorraine in the past, you know she always has more than one workshop up her sleeve and she is sure to teach a second mini-workshop on Sunday!
